Driving from the airport into Currie, I knew I had hit the jackpot. The windswept landscape, dotted with twisted trees, perfectly suited my aesthetic. But the true excitement began when I reached the port. Looking out from my residency studio, I was completely spellbound by the Currie crayboat fleet. I had never seen vessels like these, with their wheelhouses positioned at the back and heavy steel stabilizers that, when spread wide, were like the wings of a creature, bringing the boats to life.
Working in the studio opposite the harbour, watching the fleet go in and out to sea, inspired a lot of this collection. 'Sea Blood' captures this elemental connection, where the ocean is a shared life force pulsing through the veins of the King Island community. These artworks reflect the profound, wild beauty of these Southern waters and stand as a testament to my admiration for a resourceful people who carry an innate knowing of the sea.
