My work explores the hidden stories I see in architecture. Buildings speak to me, drawing me in with the tales I see in their facades, size, and shape, as well as how they interact with the space they inhabit. I am captivated by the craftsmanship, power, and histories I see in them.
My fascination with buildings and architecture began in childhood, during visits to see my father in an old hospital. The scent of mahogany staircases, the soaring ceilings, the deep architraves, curved walls, old statues, and even a bell tower—all of these elements fascinated and comforted me. The building itself seemed to offer a sense of security that I struggled to find elsewhere in my life. Since then, I've carried that same sense of comfort with me, particularly in older buildings. Now, walking through urban spaces, I am continually drawn to the shapes, materials, and stories embedded in architecture.
While many people find a sense of freedom in wide, open spaces, I find that same feeling in built-up environments. For me, architecture is not restrictive—it’s rich, full, and expressive. I see buildings as characters, each with its own personality, telling stories through their facades. Often, I sense that the exterior of a building belies darker truths, and more than once, my instincts have been right. Through research, I uncover histories that are unexpected, sometimes unsettling, but always intriguing. These discoveries reaffirm my belief that buildings speak.
My drawing and painting practice is deeply rooted in this connection to the built environment. I’m continually inspired by architecture, especially when traveling. Wherever I go, buildings capture my attention. My work becomes an ongoing conversation between myself and the structures I encounter.
